"EXPLORE LAKE BAIKAL AND THE NATIVE DESERT OF DINOSAURS"

 

 a special 8 night/9 days all inclusive  trip to Lake Baikal and  GOBI

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

 

Day 1

Upon arrival in Irkutsk we meet you with professional bi-lingual guide holding “Baikal Discovery” sign, assist with the luggage, and provide transfer to Your hotel. Enjoy Baikal Discovery Welcome Drink upon check in and time at leisure before lunch. After llunch to be served at the hotel we’ll go on sightseeing tour of Irkutsk. During the tour you will  visit historical center, Znamenskij Orthodox Cathedral, noted for its original iconostasis, graves of the Decembrists revolutionaries and the grave of so-called Russian Columbus – an early explorer of Alaska,   richly carved old-style wooden houses, central market, and other atmospheric sights of Irkutsk.  Dinner back at the hotel. Overnight.


Day 2


After breakfast we check out from the hotel to depart by coach to Listvyanka settlement, located 62 km away from Irkutsk in the mouth of the Angara river ( the lake's only outlet).  En route stop at holy Buryat “obo” where the shamanist believers used to worship their deities to do some symbolic offerings to the spirits, tie ribbons on the bushes while making wishes to follow the tradition. Then continue by coach further to Listvyanka with 10-min. stop near the legendary Shaman Rock in the outflow of the Angara from Lake Baikal.  Then check in at Baikal Hotel (tourist 1-st class hotel located on a hill slope with good view over the water surface of Lake Baikal).  Welcome drink while checking in at the hotel followed by lunch to be served at the hotel’s restaurant. After lunch- tour of Baikal Ecology Museum which has best collection of exhibits related to lake’s flora and fauna species, contain many fascinating facts about this unique lake generally accepted as the Treasure of the World and the Well of the planet Earth.
After the museum - a walking tour of Listvyanka village, visit to functioning St. Nicolas-The Miracle-Worker Orthodox Church and the shopping area where you will have a good chance to buy local hand made souvenirs (your local guide will help you to get the best price). Then enjoy time at leisure. Dinner back at the hotel. Overnight.
 
Day 3 
 
After breakfast we check out from your hotel and depart by coach for a guided tour of very scenicaly located  “Taltsy”  Open-Air Museum of Wooden Architecture which great display of original Russian, Buryat and Evenk wooden houses complete with items and exhibits unfolds in a truly exciting story about the past and history of Siberia. After that we procced further to the  Irkutsk airport  for  board a flight to Ulan Baatar. Customs control. Boarding the aircraft for international flight to Ulan Bator. Upon arrival to the city of Ulaanbaatar we will meet you at the airport gates and provide a coach transfer to the hotel. Check in and some time at leisure. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 4


This morning  you will fly to the  South Gobi, Dalanzadgad town, drive to Yolyn Am tourist ger camp located 45 km west of  Dalanzadgad, in the center of  South Gobi aimag. Yoliin am ( meaning Eagle Valley) valley has breathtaking dramatic scenery, stuck in the middle of the Gobi Desert, with 2-3 meters thick ice almost all year around,  and is no doubt is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Here you will enjoy great views of  Gurvansaihan mountains, and visit a small museum located at the gate on the main road to Eagle valley that has a collection of dinosaur eggs, bones and stuffed birds and snow leopard . This trip by 4-WD Russian made army jeeps or vans takes a half day. Overnight in gers  ( round shaped portable yurts, toilets and shower cabins outside the yurts).

 

 *Gobi- one of the most interesting and mysterious place in the world. The site of an ancient inland sea, the Gobi boasts on abundant wildlife ( over three hundred types of flora and fauna) and is home to argali (“ wild sheep”), ibex  ,  snow leopard ,  wild ass, steppe antilope , wild camel ,  Gobi bear. 
* The beautiful l peaks of  Gurvansaihan ( meaning
  “three beauties”) mountains, towering 1000 feet above the surrounding steppe , shelter glaciers which remain frozen even on the summer’s hottest day.
13 kms from the museum by car and 25minutes walk, following the stream, leads to the a gorge full of ice.   


Day  5


Full-day trip to Bayanzag, the site of an ancient inland  sea and the treasure chest of fossilized dinosaur bones, eggs and flaming cliffs. You will have a great opportunity to hike amongst the Cemetery of the Dinosaurs and explore  this magnificently strange part of the Gobi Desert where U.S. paleontologist from New York Roy Chapman Andrews exploring the  Gobi in  1920s found the dinosaur eggs, jaws and skulls. His first expedition was based at Bayanzag, which he renamed "Flamming Cliffs" and proved that protoceratops, tarbosaurus and tyrannosaurus roamed the area 70 million years ago. On the way back, visit Sand dunes. Overnight in gers.

 

 * Bayanzag (meaning “Rich Saxaul” –dwarfed bush hardwood) is a must to see in the South Gobi . Named after picturesque saxaul forest Bayanzag  is a worldwide renowned place famous for dinosaur bones and eggs discovered there. Archeologists claim that the area has also a lot of unearthed objects from the Stone Age and that it’s still possible with a bit of digging to find some dinosaur fossils in the southern Gobi, which are very precious and far more useful to paleontologists. Sixty to seventy million years ago, Bayanzag was believed to be tropical, and the area has in fact been the site of numerous discoveries of dinosaur skeletons as well as many of their preserved eggs.

 

Day  6

Drive by jeep or van to the Hermen tsav and Zulganai. Lunch as picnic near the site of your possible excavations. You’ll be also able during the trip this day  see the magnificent sites of the desert. Return back to the ger camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 7

Drive to Tugrugiin Shiree and Naran Daats Half also famous for the finding of Dinosaurus fossils remains. Half day bactrian camel riding experience can also be available today. Lunch as picnic in Nara Daats. In the evening return back to the ger camp in Dalanzadgad  for dinner and lunch.

Day 8

Fly back to Ulan Baator. Lunch. Then visit Natural history museum - the best place in Mongolia to see the remains of the dinosaurs where you will see skeleton of dinosaurs, their eggs and other exhibits, excavated in Gobi. Visit Gobi factory, which is 1 of biggest cashmere and camel wool products manufacturing plant.

Day 9

Breakfast. Departure.
